CHOKE CHANGING: Should You Change Shotgun Chokes? Pros, Cons & Clay Shooting Tips

To Twiddle or Not to Twiddle: That is the Question

What is a Choke on a Shotgun?

A shotgun choke is a constriction at the muzzle end of a shotgun barrel that controls the spread of the shot as it leaves the gun. It’s designed to improve accuracy by tightening or widening the shot pattern depending on the shooting scenario. Chokes play a key role in both clay and game shooting, affecting how quickly and precisely clays are broken at various distances.

The Twiddling Debate in Clay Shooting

When it comes to competition shooting, we all have our little quirks, from how we mount the gun to what side of the stand we start from. But choke changing or (twiddling)  has become something of a hot topic, especially among clay shooters looking for any edge they can get.

For some, choke changing between stands or even individual targets is as natural as checking your cartridges. For others, it’s an absolute no-go, a distraction that disrupts rhythm and confidence.

Fixed Chokes vs Changing Chokes: Who is Right?

Ask the top professionals, and many will tell you bluntly:

“Choose your chokes, shoot the targets, and stop overthinking it.”

Their reasoning is clear. Constantly adjusting your chokes can:

  • Break your focus

  • Add unnecessary complexity

  • Waste valuable time

  • Lead to second-guessing yourself

For these shooters, mental consistency and trust in your setup matter more than micro-adjustments. After all, modern cartridges and multi-chokes are designed to be forgiving; a well-placed shot will break clays regardless of your choke.

The Role of Confidence in Choke Selection

Confidence is key; it allows us to stay calm, trust our process and make accurate and controlled shots whilst trusting in our choke pattern.

Is There a Case For Choke Twiddling?

On the other side of the debate, you will find many accomplished competition shooters who swear by choke changing. Their philosophy is,

“If it gives me confidence, it’s worth doing.”

They argue that you should adapt your choke selection to suit the target presentation. Tighter for distant crossers, while using a more open choke for close-range crows, gives them a strategic edge.  If the process of twiddling gives them a mental boost, that can translate into better performance.

Is There a Middle Ground for Choke Strategy?

Like most things in shooting, it comes down to what works for you. If you’re new to the sport, it’s probably best to keep it simple and focus on your technique. Choose a versatile choke size such as ( ¼ and ½  or  ¼  and  ¼ ) and spend your time learning to read your targets and improving your accuracy and consistency.

If you are a seasoned shooter and find that choke changes genuinely improve your performance rather than only serve as a security blanket, then by all means, twiddle away, just remember that there is a fine line between tactical adjustment and overthinking it.

For these shooters, mental consistency and trust in your setup matter more than micro-adjustments. After all, modern cartridges and multi-chokes are designed to be forgiving, and a well-placed shot will break clays regardless of your choke.

Final Thoughts: Should You Change Your Chokes?

In the end, choke changing isn’t about right or wrong; it is about understanding what helps you break more clays. Whether you are a die-hard “set it and forget it” shooter or a strategic twiddler, the real key is to commit with confidence.

So next time you step onto the stand, ask yourself:

Are you changing chokes to gain an edge, or chasing certainty?

Because, as we all know, in competition shooting, confidence breaks more clays than chokes ever will.
